An unforgettable opening of a speech with a massive product unveiling showing the speaker at close-up, while he is holding up an old globe of the earth in front of a large sitting audience in the background

The first moments of your speech are like the opening act of a play – they set the stage, capture the audience’s attention, and ultimately determine whether they are fully invested or reaching for their phones. However, crafting an unforgettable opening can feel daunting.

Below is a repertoire of world-class opener techniques, from surprising your audience with counterintuitive facts to wielding engaging statistics, and illuminating a problem that demands action. You will learn how to spark curiosity with thought-provoking questions and leverage props to create a visually impactful introduction. Whether you choose to inspire with a glimpse into a dream-filled future, weave a personal story that connects with your audience on an emotional level or pique interest with a suspenseful delve into the past, this crisp guide equips you with the tools to craft an opening that resonates, leaving your audience not just listening, but actively engaged and eager to hear what comes next.

😲 Surprise the Audience

Many may not realize it yet, but our industry is in a dire state, if we had acted 20 years ago by… , we would have been able to…

Did you know that in most countries in the world currently, the population is rapidly decreasing?
(Pause for impact).
This mind-bending fact sets the stage for a discussion on population collapse and its implications.

🔦 Highlight a Problem / Pressing Issue

Typically 30% of the food procured by businesses in Scandinavia, for their employees, end up being discarded! How can we avoid all this perfectly fine food going to waste?

Every year, in the US alone, we throw away enough food to feed 41 million people. That’s a staggering amount of waste!(Pause for impact).
This opener identifies a problem and immediately positions you as someone with solutions.

📊 Present a Shocking Statistic

Failed IT projects in your industry are lead to a cost increase, for companies like yours, of about 30 billion USD last year.”

Did you know that in the United States alone, enough plastic water bottles are thrown away every year to circle the Earth 400 times?(Pause for impact).
That’s a staggering 2.5 million tons of plastic waste, most of which ends up in landfills or pollutes our oceans. This plastic crisis isn’t just an environmental issue – it’s a threat to our health and our future.

❓ Ask an Unusual or Provocative Question

Why is it that businesses such as ours do not educate regulators of what’s required considering the expected industry developments in the next decade?

Why is it that, despite all our technological advancements, loneliness seems to be on the rise?
(Pause for impact).
This thought-provoking question sparks curiosity and invites the audience to engage with the topic.

🙋 Ask the Audience

Who in here have struggled with meeting their own expectations, at year end when reflecting back? Raise your hand and say “I”!

“Raise your hand if you have ever felt like you are constantly playing catch-up in today’s fast-paced world!”
(Scan the audience and acknowledge their response).
This interactive approach creates a connection with the audience and sets the tone for a relatable discussion.

🌎 Use a Prop

Prop: A dusty, old globe

Start by walking confidently onto the stage and placing the globe prominently on a stand.
Pause for a beat to let the audience’s curiosity pique.
Pick up the globe and spin it slowly, keeping your voice hushed as you speak.

This globe represents our world, filled with countless destinations, each one holding a unique experience. Yet, most of us tend to trace the familiar routes, sticking to the well-worn paths on this sphere.

Stop spinning the globe and set it down with a decisive thud.

“…But what if I told you the greatest discoveries lie beyond those well-trodden paths? What if the magic happens when we dare to spin the globe, close our eyes, and let fate point us towards the unknown?”

🌌 Invite the Audience to Dream

Imagine being able to live among the stars, travelling between planets as if you were going to another city. Weightless, gazing at swirling galaxies, the cosmos unfolds before you. Science fiction, you say? Not entirely. The dreams of yesterday are blasting off as today’s realities. But dreams are more than distant destinations; they’re the fuel that launches us forward. They spark innovation, ignite passion, and guide us towards a brighter tomorrow. Today, I invite you on a journey – not just through the vast expanse of space, but through the limitless potential of our own imaginations. Because within each of us lies the power to dream, and within those dreams, the power to change the world.

Imagine a world where clean energy powers our cities, and pollution is a relic of the past.
(Paint a vivid picture with your words).
This optimistic vision sets a positive tone and piques interest in the solutions you will present.

🕵 Create Suspense

Silence hangs heavy. The past, they say, is a locked room. Tonight, we’ll pick the lock. Not with tools, but with the questions that ignite curiosity and rewrite what we thought we knew. Are you ready to unlock the past’s mysteries?

The year is 2040. Technology has transformed our lives in ways we can’t even imagine today. But at what cost?
(Let the mystery hang in the air).
This suspenseful opener hooks the audience and makes them eager to learn more about the challenges and opportunities of the future.

📖 Start with a Story

The salty spray stung my face as I clung to the mast, the storm raging around us. Fear threatened to consume me, but then Captain Cora, his voice steady as the ship, barked orders. In that moment, I realized courage wasn’t the absence of fear, but the will to act in spite of it. And that’s the kind of courage we need today to face the challenges ahead…

For even more impact, several of these can be successfully combined, such as using a prop and starting with a story such as Jill Bolte Taylor did in her brilliant TED Talk “My Stroke of Insight“. Read more about this talk here.
