Today’s guest is Dr. Pete Worden.
Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by the universe’s vastness, our place in it, and life’s big questions. This has drawn me toward exploration and new frontiers. Pete, is a leading figure in space exploration. A retired US Air Force brigadier-general, astrophysicist, and visionary. He’s devoted his career to advancing space science, technology, and global collaboration. I’m truly honored to have him on. Thanks to Daniel Varming, of Space Lab, for the connection.
Pete holds a BS in Physics & Astronomy, and a PhD in Astronomy. He served 29 years in the Air Force, commanding the 50th Space Wing, directing roles in Air Force Space-Command, and acting as deputy for technology in the Strategic Defense Initiative. He led the 1994 Clementine lunar mission, earning NASA’s Outstanding Leadership Medal.
From 2006–2015, he directed NASA’s Ames Research Center, turning it into a powerhouse for innovation, astrobiology, and industry partnerships. His awards include the “2009 Federal Laboratory Consortium Director of the Year” and the “2010 Arthur C. Clarke Innovator’s Award.”
Since 2015, Pete has chaired the Breakthrough Prize Foundation and led the Breakthrough Initiatives to search for extra-terrestrial life. He spearheads Breakthrough Starshot to send light-sail probes to nearby stars like Alpha Centauri. Through this work, he continues inspiring future explorers with profound questions such as: Are we alone? & How do we reach the stars?
