Practicing Mental Hygiene

Hygiene illustrated by two toothbrushes and a soap on tree stump

These days it can be challenging to separate facts for fiction, or detect fake news/info. Thus, it can be helpful to practice some mental hygiene on a regular basis. This can be done through a basic test, equivalent to washing our hands.

  1. What is the source? Is it a reliable media organization? Is it backed up by other reliable sources?
  2. How likely is the fact? The less likely, the greater the burden of evidence.
  3. Is there any sources out there suggesting it is fake? Rather than looking for evidence to support our beliefs, we should strive to search for evidence against our beliefs.
  4. Can we emotionally accept that our belief might be wrong?
